Barber was born in November, 1919 in Dehart, Kentucky. In 1940, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving for a few years at the parachute training schools in San Diego and in New River, North Carolina. In 1945, he landed with his company at Iwo Jima, the only combat experience he had in World War II. But it was for his bravery during the Korean War that Captain Barber received the Medal of Honor.
