In 1682, Nathaniel Thompson, William Pain, and John Farwell, printers and publishers associated with The Loyal Protestant Intelligence were tried at the Guildhall of London for libel, accused of disseminating letters and articles asserting that Sir Edmundbury Godfrey had died by su…icide rather than murder. Godfrey's mysterious death in 1678 had been a catalyst for the Popish Plot hysteria, widely believed to be the work of Catholic conspirators. By challenging this narrative, Thompson and his associates were seen as undermining the legitimacy of the Plot and casting doubt on the Protestant cause. The prosecution focused on their role in printing and circulating politically charged material that contradicted the official account and inflamed public tensions. The trial reflects the fraught intersection of journalism, propaganda, and state power in Restoration England, where the printed word could be as dangerous as any weapon. 20 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy.
