Recently, a number of novel mechanisms involved in activation and desensitization have been elucidated. The similarities of the molecular mechanisms of activation and desensitization in the various systems are striking. In the first book (1987) on this topic, the functional and structural similarities of the various mechanisms to attenuate the effect of an outward signal were emphasized. Justification to have a second book three years later is the explosive growth of information in the field. More components involved in signal transfer have been discovered and also that several more G-proteins appear to play a role during this process. The interest in signal attenuation concurs with these developments. The emphasis in this book is on the common signal transfer elements responsible for activation and desensitization in animals, plants and microorganisms.…

Isaac van Haestert, geboren te Delft in 1753, overleden aldaar den 1 Maart 1834, was een konstschilder en teekenaar, en een der eerste oprigters van het godsdienstig genootschap Christo Sacrum in zijne geboortestad, waarbij hij een ruim aantal jaren de eer- en leerdienst waarnam. Hij beoefende ook de dichtkunst en fraaije letteren, blijkens zijne in 1785 te Leyden uitgegeven Proeve van Mengelpoëzy, dat in 1802 gevolgd werd door een dichtstuk de Godsdienst en in 1826 door eenen bundel Mengelpoezij. Ook komen er dichtstukken van hem voor in de werken van het Haagsche dichtgenootschap Kunstliefde spaart geen vlijt, waarvan hij ook lid was. Zijne dichtvruchten 'onderscheiden zich meer door netheid en beschaafdheid, dan door hooge dichterlijke vlugt; er heerscht nogtans in dezelve, en bijzonder in de laatste, een toon van zacht godsdienstig gevoel, het uitvloeisel van 's mans voor eenvoudige en nederige godsvrucht gestemde ziel, welke den lezer inneemt en bekoort."
