Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First Printing [Stated]. xi, [3], 240, [2] pages. Some wear, small chips, and scuffs to dust jacket. Includes Foreword by Katharine Hepburn. Also includes 47 black and white photographs of Hal Wallis and his friends and colleagues. Harold Brent Wallis (born Aaron Blum Wolowicz; October 19, 1898 - October 5, 1986) was an American film producer. He is best remembered for producing Casablanca (1942), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), and True Grit (1969), along with many other major films for Warner Bros. featuring such film stars as Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Bette Davis, and Errol Flynn. Later on, for a long period, he was connected with Paramount Pictures and oversaw films featuring Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Elvis Presley, and John Wayne. In March 1944, Wallis won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 16th Academy Awards. For his consistently high quality of motion picture production, he was twice honored with the Academy Awards' Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. He was also nominated for seven Golden Globe awards, twice winning awards for Best Picture. In 1975, he received the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. Charles Higham (18 February 1931 - 21 April 2012) was an English author, editor and poet. In the United States, he became known as a celebrity biographer, mainly of film stars, such as Katharine Hepburn and Errol Flynn. Close friends of another of his subjects, Orson Welles, in particular Peter Bogdanovich, were critical of Higham's interpretation of his career. A main theme of this book is Hal Wallis' ability to discover great stars, including Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Humphrey Bogart, Shirley MacLaine, Errol Flynn, Charlton Heston, Kirk Douglas, and Jerry Lewis. A main theme of this book is Hal Wallis' hilarious battle with blue-nosed censorship, which strove to clean up Hollywood pictures in a more puritanical age. This book is filled with inside stories about the making of such classics as Casablanca, Jezebel, The Life of Emile Zola, Pasteur, The Rose Tattoo, and many others. Derived from a Kirkus review: Wallis, who produced many of the films that gave Warner Bros. its gritty, grainy character in the Thirties, sets down a straightforward account of his career. Chicago-born and transplanted to California, Wallis got to Warner Bros. in the Twenties via his savvy sister Minna; but his own pizazz got him the job of publicity director at age 20. And from there on it was a fast move--with talkies--to producer and executive-in-charge-of-production, despite efforts by Jack Warner to call the shots and take the credit. It was Wallis who insisted on the naturalism in those WB pix, who risked those great serious biographicals, who even created that superb last line for Casablanca. And when Warner jumped up to grab the Casablanca Oscar, Wallis struck out on his own--in affiliation with Paramount and other studios. Favorite colleagues? Director Michael Curtiz, Edward G. Robinson, Katharine Hepburn, Elvis Presley ("a joy to work with in every way"). Un-favorites? Cagney and Joan Fontaine, Shirley MacLaine, and Jerry Lewis. He's a tough old guy who got his hand into every aspect of movie-making, and, filled out with a selection of memoirs from the files, his annotated filmography is a valuable addition to the American-film reference shelf.
