From Booklist: "On the night of July 17, 1947, the ship Exodus, with 4,500 Holocaust survivors, was attempting to break through a British blockade of what was then Palestine. Several hours later the Exodus was attacked by the British navy, with British soldiers charging the ship but met by resistance. Three Jewish passengers were killed and dozens injured. Taken to the port of Haifa, the illegal immigrants were transferred to three deportation ships. Halamish's book examines what happened to the immigrants after they were denied admission: weeks spent on the three ships ('floating concentration camps'), their brutal removal from the ships by British soldiers in Hamburg, and their forced settlement in two hellish camps in northern Germany. Drawing on an impressive array of research materials, Halamish, on a human level, presents a stunning portrait of courage and heroism in the face of anguish and adversity." -- George Cohen. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Very Fine condition/Very Fine dust jacket. 8vo. xxii, 313pp. + 16 pages of photos.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 2nd. Cloth, dj. Minor shelf wear. Else a bright, clean copy. The story of the real Exodus, the legendary ship that became the symbol of the struggle for a Jewish state, is no less fascinating than the work of fiction bearing her name. Jewish survivors of the Holocaust - 4,500 of them - were denied access to what they considered to be their homeland, and after a brutal battle with more than half a dozen British war ships near the coast of Palestine, the survivors were sent back to Europe. Refusing to disembark, in spite of the generous hospitality offered them by the French government, the Jewish survivors were forcefully expelled to the British-ruled zone in Germany, the charnel house of their people. The book includes a number of previously undisclosed facts and deals for the first time with lesser known aspects of the affair, such as the role of the American volunteers and the involvement of the JDC (Joint Distribution Committee). It also critically examines the historiography of illegal immigration and the struggle for a Jewish state during the years 1945 to 1948.

Meir Yaari (1897-1987) was the leader of Hashomer Hatza'ir, a movement which took an active part in shaping the history of the Jewish people in the crucial decades of the twentieth century. Its Kibbutzim had a leading role in matters of aliyah, settlement, and defense in mandatory Palestine and then independent Israel, and its members were among the organizers of Jewish resistance and revolt during the Holocaust. This biography discusses pivotal issues in the history of the Jewish people and the State of Israel, such as the friction between Zionism and socialism, the Arab question, the absorption of new immigrants, and generation gaps and conflicts. The book blends individual and collective perspectives and never loses sight of the tension between ideology and reality.
