hardcover. second edition. 8vo 550pp. later printing of second edition. from Preface: "This book is an enlarged and revised edition of a book published, with the same title, by the late Thomas Bulfinch, of Boston, in the year 1855. From the moment of its publication it met with a favorable reception, both from the teachers of yo…ung people, and form the young people themselves,--and it has been in constant circulation and demand since that time. The stereotype plates having been wholly worn out in the publication of successive editions, the publishers have asked me to revise the book, in preparation for a new and enlarged edition,--and in particular, to add such references to the literature of the last thirty years as might carry forward the admirable plan of the author, and, for readers of the English language, might bring the book down to the present time." #02981. Book VG-: soil/wear to boards and spine, rubbing/shelf wear to corners, spine sunned, toning and foxing to endpapers, gift inscription FFEP, text clean, binding tight.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No DJ included. Facsimile. Only print info on copy right page is the copy right year of August 1905. Title page states "An Exact Reproduction of the text and illustrations of the original edition published and copyrighted in Boston in the year 1833 by Munroe & Francis".… Smaller book- approximately 5" by 5.75". Profusely illustrated; nearly every page has a B&W drawing / illustration accompanying the rhyme. Author Edward Everett Hale was best known for his writings such as "The Man Without a Country" and for being the grand-nephew of Nathan Hale, the American spy during the Revolutionary War. Paper from this period (1900's) is heavier, cotton based so not surprisingly that the pages are still bright in appearance. The page edges are foxing and soiling. The binding is holding well but loose; signatures are attached but there are cracks at various signatures. Spine must be carefully supported when reading. NO folds, creases or missing signatures in interior pages. No writing except for pencil scribbling on back end papers and a torn end page. This is NOT an ex-lib nor a remainder nor a reprint. Tan cloth covers with a pasted down paper illustration on front and back cover is lightly soiled, and rubbed. Wear along edges and a few surface scrapings throughout. This wear has to be expected on a 121 year old children's book. See pictures. Note: We have a closed shop - so our books are not handled often by the public. We take pride in describing books as accurately as possible. "Fine or Near fine" book condition judiciously; only when the book/magazine exhibits few or no flaws. Any flaws (writing, tears, creases) are exceptions to a Fine condition and should be clearly described for a book, or magazine.

First edition thus. Illustrated throughout with pen and ink drawings accompanying the text. 12mo, publisher's original illustrated boards, decorated in green on both covers. 100. A nice copy with some age mellowing a bit of shelf rubbing to the edges. AN EXACT REPRODUCTION OF THE TEXT AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE ORIGINAL EDITION PU…BLISHED AND COPYRIGHTED IN BOSTON IN THE YEAR 1833 BY MUNRO &FRANCIS. Some believe the original Mother Goose was the Bostonian wife of Isaac Goose, either named Elizabeth Foster Goose (16651758) or Mary Goose (d. 1690). "Mother Goose" used to sing songs and ditties to her grandchildren all day, and other children swarmed to hear them. Finally, it was said, her son-in-law gathered her jingles together and printed them, but no evidence of such a printing has ever been found.
