Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Ex Library San Jose, CA. Marked as such. Treaty Ports by Hallett Abend is a historical work that examines the history and significance of treaty ports in China during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These were ports that were opened to foreign trade and residence through treaties between China and various Western powers, starting with the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, which ended the First Opium War. The book explores how these treaty ports, such as Shanghai, Canton, and Hong Kong, became centers of foreign influence, with foreign governments exerting control over parts of Chinese cities. Abend delves into the political, economic, and social dynamics of the time, shedding light on the cultural exchanges, exploitation, and tensions that arose between the Chinese population and foreign nationals. Treaty Ports provides a critical perspective on the era of imperialism and its lasting impact on China.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A true first edition of one of the best contemporary American histories of the foreign treaty-port system in China. Veteran Far East correspondent Hallett Abend traces the emergence of the treaty ports from the Treaty of Nanking through nearly a century of diplomacy, commerce, missionary activity, imperial rivalry, and war. Drawing upon decades of reporting throughout China and Japan, Abend combines historical narrative with firsthand observation, producing an engaging account of Shanghai, Hong Kong, Canton, Ningbo, the Opium Wars, foreign concessions, American diplomacy, and the final decades of the treaty-port era leading into World War II. Published in 1944, while Allied strategy in the Pacific placed renewed attention on East Asia, the work remains an important period interpretation of Western involvement in China before the Communist Revolution. Condition: Good (former library). Original cloth remains structurally sound with moderate rubbing, scattered soiling, and noticeable fraying at the spine ends, corners, and fore-edge cloth. Binding is firm and square. Interior pages are clean with moderate age toning. No dust jacket present. Library evidence includes embossed Public Library San Jose, Cal. ownership stamps, discarded stamp, accession markings, shelf number on the spine, date stamp ("Oct. 9, 1944"), and remnants of removed circulation materials on the endpapers. Despite institutional use, the text remains complete and highly presentable. This copy possesses an unusually rich and traceable California provenance. The front pastedown bears the stamp of Oriental Book Store, 1713 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena - a respected Southern California bookseller specializing in Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian-language books that served scholars, collectors, and immigrant communities during the mid-twentieth century. The rear pastedown retains the original gilt-and-green Lindsay - San Jose bookseller label, documenting the volume's later passage through one of San Jose's best-known independent bookstores. Together with the San Jose Public Library ownership embossing, these marks document the book's movement through three distinct institutions of California book culture: a major public library, a specialist Asian bookseller, and a regional independent bookstore. True First Edition, confirmed by the explicit "FIRST EDITION" statement on the copyright page. The wartime production notice ("Manufactured under wartime conditions…") is consistent with Doubleday's 1944 publications issued under U.S. paper conservation regulations. No indications of a later printing. Hallett Edward Abend (1884-1955) was among America's foremost foreign correspondents in East Asia during the first half of the twentieth century. Reporting for The New York Times and later the New York Sun, he spent more than three decades covering China, Japan, and the Pacific, witnessing the Chinese Revolution, the rise of Japanese militarism, the Manchurian Crisis, and the Second Sino-Japanese War. His books are valued today because they combine the perspective of an experienced journalist with firsthand familiarity gained through extensive travel and diplomatic contacts. Treaty Ports remains one of his most enduring works, offering a contemporary interpretation of the commercial, political, and cultural forces that shaped Western engagement with China during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.…
