Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 12mo, x, (11)-237, 4 pgs. Frontis, publisher advertising, illustrations. Original brown embossed title and decorated front cover, gilt titled spine. With comic illustrations by E.F. Mullen, from the Records of the NY Herald. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light rubbing to covers, edges, corners and spine ends. Top of spine a bit frayed and lightly faded. Interior pages are age-toned, else clean and tight. With clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author mustered in with the 69th NY as lieutenant in April 1861. Became aide-de-camp to Colonel Hunter and mustered out with the regiment in August 1865. Drawing on his previous newspaper experience, he became one of the most well-known and popular humorists of the Civil War with his stories of Private Miles O Reilly. His character is an ignorant Irish enlisted man who gave free opinions to events and people which Halpine, as an officer and a gentleman, could not. Halpine was twice breveted for gallantry and distinguished service and ended the War as a Brigadier General. Due to failing eyesight, Halpine resigned from the service on July 31, 1864. Nice copy of a war-time publication, with its social stereo-typing of the day, usually found in poor condition. REFERENCES: DORN NY 362.
