Although uncommonly learned, Lady Mary disdained such a reputation, thinking of herself as an aristocratic lady and a bel esprit; she began her literary career as the daughter of a duke, and ended it as the mother-in-law of a prime minister. But her many-faceted career was far from monotonous: she scribbled witty and scandalous verse, she bravely accompanied her husband on his embassy to Turkey, she brought back and popularized smallpox inoculation, she was first adored and then bitterly attacked by the greatest poet of the day, she patronized worthy writers and plain hacks, she published anonymous essays on feminist and political topics, and then, most enigmatically, she left England to spend the last two decades of her life on the Continent. Her most substantial fame, however, came after her death, when her brilliant Turkish Embassy letters were published, and won the admiration of readers as diverse as Johnson, Gibbon, Walpole, and Voltaire. Still later, her reputation was strengthened by the publication of her private letters, particularly the ones to her sister Lady Mar, with their cynical picture of London high life, and the ones to her daughter Lady Bute, with their philosophical and literary ruminations.
