Hij publiceerde veel over het functioneren van de democratie in binnen- en buitenland. Rudy Andeweg (1952) is hoogleraar empirische politicologie aan de Universiteit Leiden en lid van de knaw. De vraag of democratieën in een legitimiteitscrisis verkeren staat centraal in diverse van zijn publicaties. Carolien van Ham (1980) is postdoctoraal onderzoeker aan de Universiteit Twente, waar zij werkt aan het onderzoeksproject 'Verkeert de representatieve democratie in een legitimiteitscrisis?', gefinancierd door de KNAW.
