The volume reviews Spemann's investigations into amphibian embryology and follows the various research directions that grew out of his Freiburg laboratory, connecting early twentieth-century experimental embryology to subsequent developments in cellular and developmental science. Drawing on firsthand familiarity with Spemann and his collaborators, Hamburger situates this work within the broader history of biological inquiry.
