Volumes IIIV (of IV) of the Urdu Thousand and One Nights as rendered by the Lucknow trained poet and barrister Hamid Shahabadi, produced as a popular lithograph with visual storytelling for a wide readership. - Each volume opens with an ornate title page framed by floral borders, while the tales are punctuated by full page lithographic plates, including courtly and hunting scenes such as the king riding out with princes and courtiers. The set belongs to the flourishing North Indian tradition of Urdu lithography in elegant nastaliq, allied to the great illustrated dastan and qissa market centred on Lucknow and its affiliated presses in the later 19th century. Shahabadi's prose rendering, here among the earlier illustrated printings of his version, helped carry the "Nights" to a broad Urdu audience through accessible typography by lithograph and plentiful images.Our translator Hamid 'Ali Khan was a prosperous and successful man by the late 1880s. He had completed his legal training in London and returned to practice law at Lucknow in 1886. - Here surviving in the last three of four volumes, the present group preserves the visual programme and paratextual chronograms characteristic of the issue and offers a representative specimen of Indo Muslim popular print culture at its late Victorian height. - Wrappers and text lightly handled; occasional spotting and minor edge wear; illustrations strong and well struck.
