The cleverness of the central conceit animating Laurell Hamilton's two series of novels certainly deserves some kind of acknowledgment. Both are set in alternative contemporary urban environments. In the case of "detective" Meredith ("Merry") Gentry, our heroine is a hereditary princess of a race of (human-appearing) magic-wielding fairies who have been allowed to emigrate from Europe to America and move into the ancient Indian mounds near author Hamilton's hometown of St. Louis. In the case (as here) of federally licensed vampire slayer Anita Blake, on the other hand, the alternative modern reality features vampires, werewolves, and other shapeshifters who not only live fairly openly in a slightly different alternative St. Louis (operating nightclubs, for the most part, and even a church that offers its own version of Eternal Life), but who are (of course) now protected by federal anti-discrimination laws. (Our heroine can only kill really BAD vampires, see, and then supposedly only with a court order. Usually.) In both cases, our heroine doesn't have sex with males of multiple shapes, sizes and colors -- constantly, alternately, sometimes even simultaneously -- because she's promiscuous by NATURE, see. No, no. The poor thing HAS to subject herself to these (admittedly pleasurable) indignities to restore fertility to the dying faerie realm, or to keep peace between the various rival factions of the undead, or something. And thus the sub-genre of soft-core porn in which we used to be stuck with randy housewives seducing the pool man and the delivery boy is now elevated into what is delicately and admiringly dubbed "urban fantasy," with literally millions sold. It's a cute trick and we recommend the first several installments in each series, even while acknowledging the heterosexual male reader is probably not the main target audience. Though you can only watch the little dogs jump through their hoops a certain number of times; one eventually begins to wonder if our long-suffering heroine is ever going to encounter a male who DOESN'T display a broad and muscular chest and shoulders, and slim hips, and wear his beautiful hair long. Come on, Laurell! What about a balding token tubby? This appears to be the 19th (!) of the 26 Anita Blake novels, to date. It opens with a quite lengthy . . . wait for it . . . dance recital. The vampires all go to a children's dance recital. And no one misbehaves. Really. 356 pp.
