Set in England during the early 18th century, How the Vote Was Won uses comedy to tell a story in support of women's suffrage. The play, supporting women's suffrage, was both popular in the United Kingdom and the United States and was one of the first major hits for the Actresses' Franchise League. In fair condition, the binding is straight and tight, the covers darkened and the lettering on the spine bright. There is loss to the top corner of the front cover, loss to the edge of the front cover, loss to the bottom corner to the front cover, tears to the top and bottom of the spine, loss to the top edge of the spine and marks to the back cover. The end papers and pages are free from tears and inscriptions. There are two marks to the front end paper. A play of significant historical importance and unseen elsewhere. First edition, the copy of the women's suffrage campaigner Hugh Franklin, with his initials on the front wrapper. The one-act play is based on Hamilton's illustrated pamphlet of the same name, which was published earlier the same year. Franklin (1889-1962) joined the Men's League for Women's Suffrage in 1909. He was imprisoned three times for his militant actions during the women's suffrage campaign, which included attacking Winston Churchill with a dog whip. He went on hunger strike each time he was incarcerated and was force-fed on multiple occasions. He later married the suffragette Elsie Duval. How the Vote was Won is "a modern version of Lysistrata set at the time of a women's general strike and ridicules the notion of coverture whereby English law assumed a woman to come under the protection of her nearest male relative" (ODNB).
