The 15-p. appendix consists of the first publication of Johnson's tract on the corn laws, as edited by Edmond Malone. The essay was written by Johnson in November, 1766 (as shown by both Malone and Greene), for his friend William Gerard Hamilton, at a time when corn was very expensive and there had been riots in the Midlands.
