Di come, già a scuola, si disamorò dello stalinismo. Delle assurdità della burocrazia romena. Della decisione di vivere a Bucarest, di laurearsi in ingegneria e di diventare uno scrittore. Racconta ancora di come, poco prima del crollo della dittatura, approdato in Germania grazie a una borsa di studio, scelse con consapevolezza di non tornare in patria e di essere uno scrittore in esilio. Ebreo, decise di non andare in Israele, approdò invece negli Stati Uniti. Das k.u.k.-Reich mit Wien als Hauptstadt ist der Nabel der Welt. In dieser Szenerie entwickelt sich die Geschichte des jungen Protagonisten Alexej, der eine Liaison mit einer Gesellschaftsdame eingeht, deren Mann auf dem Mond weilt - einer deutschen Kolonie, wo er als k.u.k.-Hofastronom arbeitet. Dramatische Nachrichten von dort kundigen an, dass ein Komet auf Kollisionskurs zur Erde ist und in wenigen Monaten einschlagen soll.
