Der Grund liegt zum Teil darin, daB die geriatrische Ausbildung an den deut schen Universitaten, mit gewissen Ausnahmen, stiefmiitterlich behandelt wird. Die Geriatrie gewinnt jedoch aus vielerlei Griinden zunehmend an Bedeutung, vergleichbar mit der sich urn die Jahrhundertwende zum selbstandigen Fach entwickelnden padiatrie. Der praktizierende Arzt muB sich heute mehr als friiher mit den Belangen gesunder und kranker Betagter beschiiftigen. Statistische Erhebungen lassen eine erhebliche absolute und relative Zunahme alterer und alter Patienten in den iirztlichen Praxen erkennen. Da in Deutschland vielerorts geriatrische Kli niken und Abteilungen fehlen, ist der Arzt gezwungen, geriatrische Aufgaben soweit wie moglich selbst zu bewaltigen. Dabei hat sich in der modemen Ge riatrie ein gewisser Wandel von der vorwiegend kurativen zur praventiven und rehabilitierenden Medizin vollzogen.
