Condizione: Very Good. Softcover. Biedermeier examines Biedermeier painting, furniture and decorative arts as a style and a cultural attitude. Visual arts of the period, which are still largely unstudied as distinct from Romanticism or the Nazarenes, are highlighted here in the work of Georg Friedrich Kersting and Eduard Gaertne…r. With nearly 300 outstanding examples of German, Austrian and Czechoslovakian paintings, furniture, related decorative arts and works on paper, this is a superb document of the innovative character of the period and its importance as a precursor to modernism. Hardcover. Condizione: New in shrinkwrap. Black cloth boards with white stamped spine lettering. Glossy black and illustrated dust jacket with white lettering. xi, 194 pp. Mainly color illustrations. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Bard Graduate Center, New York, July 22-Oct. 17, 2004. Contents as follows: Collecting neoc…lassical decorative art at The metropolitan museum of art / Heather Jane McCormick -- The metamorphosis of the neoclassical vase / Hans Ottomeyer -- The Hamilton collection and its influence -- The vase as a template for artists and early neoclassicism -- Tradition and innovation at the royal manufactories -- Technical discoveries and the commercial marketing of the vase -- Neoclassicism and the new aesthetic in silver -- The vase as ornament in furniture and furnishings -- The vase as a design element in interiors -- Symbol to satire: the vase as icon. When the ancient sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii were excavated in the eighteenth century, the objects found there renewed artistic interest in classicism. Neoclassical style and imagery permeated paintings, sculpture, furniture, and decorative arts of the period, and a central element of design in all these art forms was the vase." "This book focuses on the vase as an artistic and ornamental form in a variety of media. It presents and discusses almost one hundred hidden treasures from The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection - not only vases but also wine and water urns, knife boxes, ink wells, perfume burners, fabrics, carved paneling, marquetry furniture, silver, works on paper, and paintings - all using the vase motif. Vase imagery ranged from austere to fantastic to romantic, say the authors of this book, and the vase became a new paradigm of beauty as well as an icon of European neoclassicism."--Jacket.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. SELLING MAJOR LIBRARY AT EXTREMELY REASONABLE PRICES. New, in original packaging with plastic wrap. Gottlieb Biedermeier, a teasing middle-class papa best known for his appearances in a Munich satirical weekly, came to fame in the 1840s. A "god-loving everym…an," he represented the typical German citizen, more interested in a comfortable home and a convivial family than political activism. The poets who created him, needling the bourgeoisie and signing their own work "Biedermeier," weren't thinking about the elegant housewares that now bear their pseudonym, varied by a letter. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, their alter ego had retroactively given his name to the aesthetics and philosophies of the period his attitudes suited so well, from 1815 to 1835. Biedermeier arts and crafts were orderly, frugal and simplistic. They tended to pare forms to their essentials, merging the useful with the beautiful. Eighteenth-century gilding and frills were stripped away in favor of the natural beauty of materials and shapes. What began as an intellectual critique soon developed into a new model for living. Biedermeier examines Biedermeier painting, furniture and decorative arts as a style and a cultural attitude. Visual arts of the period, which are still largely unstudied as distinct from Romanticism or the Nazarenes, are highlighted here in the work of Georg Friedrich Kersting and Eduard Gaertner. With nearly 300 outstanding examples of German, Austrian and Czechoslovakian paintings, furniture, related decorative arts and works on paper, this is a superb document of the innovative character of the period and its importance as a precursor to modernism.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. HERTER BROTHERS - FURNITURE AND INTERIORS FOR A GILDED AGE by Katherine Howe and others, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1994. The Herter brothers extraordinary accomplishments have never before been the subject of a book. Here is an in-depth study of these talented…men, their company, and its work, prized then as now for its design, richness of materials and detail, superb craftsmanship, and splendid diversity. The best of the Herter Brothers furniture and interiors are displayed in 133 color and 167 black-and-white illustrations, including many close-up details as well as comparative work by rival fine cabinetmakers of the time in New York and Europe. This book tells the story of the company from its earliest manifestations, when Gustave worked with other partners and alone, through his partnership with his brother, to Christian s years as head of the firm and the end of his tenure. The book places the company firmly in its context, international as well as domestic, with an extensive discussion of the brothers background and influences and an absorbing narrative of the furniture and decoration trade in New York City in the latter half of the nineteenth century. This book also reviews superb work done by the firm for their wealthy patrons. These commissions, many illustrated here, included woodwork, plasterwork, lighting fixtures, window treatments, wall and ceiling paintings, carpets, textiles, mosaics, stained glass, and decorative objects in addition to furniture. This book is a work of art in itself, and belongs in the permanent library of the connoisseur of American furniture. 8.9 x 11.3 hardback book with dust cover in very good condition. 272 pages.
