Heike Kamerlingh Onnes was een Nederlands natuurkundige, winnaar van de Nobelprijs voor Natuurkunde en hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Leiden. "Door meten tot weten" was de slagzin van zijn laboratorium. Deze lijfspreuk introduceerde hij bij zijn inaugurele rede in 1882. Hij gaf daarmee aan welk belang hij hechtte aan experimenteel werk om kennis te vergaren. Zijn onderzoeksgebied was dat van de fysica van de gecondenseerde materie, waarin hij in 1911 het verschijnsel van de supergeleiding ontdekte.
