Reading is one of the great pleasures in life. About the college: Colgate University is a private liberal arts college located in the Village of Hamilton in Madison County, New York, USA. It was founded in 1819 as a Baptist seminary, but has since become non-denominational. As of 2008, Colgate is ranked 17th in U.S. News and World Report's rankings of liberal arts colleges in the United States. It is also listed as one of thirty Hidden Ivies. Colgate students compete in 23 NCAA Division I sports. Colgate has a distinct architectural style. Its first building, West Hall, was built by students and faculty from stones from Colgate's own rock quarry, and a majority of the newer buildings are built in a similar fashion. The most distinctive building on campus is the Chapel ; Colgate Memorial Chapel, which is used for lectures, performances, concerts, and religious services. In 1817, the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York was founded by thirteen men ; six clergymen and seven laymen. Two years later, in 1819, the state granted the school's charter, and in 1820, the school was opened. In 1823, Baptists in New York City ; including soap maker William Colgate, who created Colgate-Palmolive; moved their seminary to Hamilton, NY to form the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution. B. Colgate, established the Dodge Memorial Fund. The theological side of Colgate merged with the Rochester Theological Seminary in 1928 to become the Colgate Rochester Divinity School, leaving Colgate to become non-denominational. In 1970, Colgate became coeducational. Colgate offers 51 undergraduate concentrations[5] leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree, all of which are registered officially with the New York State Department of Education. The three most common majors are biology, economics, and political science. In addition, Colgate has strong foreign language, physics, history, psychology/neuroscience and geology departments. This "children's book" was created by Shelley Smith, an artist residing in Savannah, GA, whom spontaneously chose to set out on an eye-opening adventure to assist children at an orphanage in Haiti called Harmony House. She ventured there knowing no one in Haiti, but simply wanting to assist as a volunteer after reading online that the home needed assistance for summer programs. After working with the children for weeks, she wrote a story about one of their projects, creating their own garden, a way to teach them the importance of the soil and ways of sustaining themselves. All of the children, ages 4-18, participated in illustrating the book. For Shelley, this was not a brief "feel good" experience, but was life changing. She wanted to figure out how to use the experience, and the book, to assist the children, as well as the "graduates" of the orphanage that are now on their own. She arranged the book with final editing assistance by her good friend Travis Sawyer of Creative Approach Savannah. Not only does it include the children's book, which is wonderful reading for young readers, but has some additional pictures of artwork by some of the children. The back few pages include several "adult reading" excerpts from Shelley's personal diary that reveal how overwhelming it was arriving in a third world country as well as experiencing such excessive poverty. It is a brief insight into her experience coping with such abrupt changes and language differences in a place where most do not speak English. 100% of the profits of the book will go to Harmony House in Haiti as well as two of the children that no longer reside there due to their ages. Shelley has since returned to Haiti with friend Elizabeth Lillard, whom she asked to join her and assist her into helping provide the children with a traditional Christmas experience complete with morning presents and a "Charlie Brown" christmas tree.
