"In post-World War II America there were published a few small conservative magazines like Human Events, analysis, and Plain Talk, but there were none like the liberal New Republic or Nation that could influence and focus national attention on conservative issues and answers. Within that milieu, it would be difficult to overestimate the importance of the Freeman to the development of modern-day conservative and libertarian sensibilities. All the internal controversies and tensions that characterize a fledgling political faith were contained in its pages. With great verve, it leveled criticisms at liberal domestic and foreign policies and tried to present viable alternatives. By the end of 1955, when new owners changed the nature of the magazine, a self-conscious and relatively coherent movement had evolved. If 'creeping conservatism' was the grand trend of the 1950s, then the Freeman had been its professional and articulate journal of opinion." --- Charles Hamilton.

Only trivial additional signs of age/wear/previous use to book and dust jacket: primarily a 5 inch diagonal crease to lower fore-edge corner of front flap of dust jacket and two barely noticeable 7 inch vertical 'bends' to front panel.

In 154 pages, with…68 duotone illustrations from photos + frontispiece tipped in, all by Harold A. Taylor, who was just making his way as a notable Western photographer. In his Introduction, architect Bertram Goodhue explains why some of the park's features were designed to be temporary ("essentially the fabric of a dream"), & should be razed after the fair, & some should become permanent fixtures in what endures today as Balboa Park. A FIRST EDITION, first printing, from 1916 (the fair had opened the previous year & would close on 1 Jan 1917), this hardcover 8vo is bound in a nubby tan cloth & lettered in gilt to front & spine. Condition is Fine: completely clean & bright, binding straight & strong, deckle-edged pages tanned, but completely supple. Old gift inscription dated 1921 to half title page in lovely script, along with recipient's bookplate. pages white with a hint of tanning to edges. Clipping featuring a letter to the Editor of the local paper (the San Diego Union) tucked in rear, darkening pages there.
