Sie können aus Stein, Bronze, Elfenbein, Ton oder Holz geformt sein und waren für den Kult oder auch als Weih- oder Grabbeigaben bestimmt. Sie gehören zu den ältesten Zeugnissen künstlerischer Ferti…gkeiten. So verschieden wie ihre Formen waren, so schwierig und widersprüchlich ist auch ihre Deutung. Wurden ihnen magische Kräfte zugeschrieben, hatten sie Schutzfunktionen, oder welche Rolle spielten sie im Kult? Noch Jahrhunderte nach der Reformation wurden im Christentum Idole mit Götzen gleichgesetzt, meist negativ und inhaltlich mit antiken Götterbildern gleichgesetzt. Widersprüchliches fand in der Reformationszeit statt. Bilderstürmer entfernten nicht nur heidnische Götzen sondern auch christliche Bildwerke. Mancherorts wird von den Wänden gerissen, was als Idol oder als Götze angesehen und als unchristlich befunden wurde. Dennoch blieben in Nordeuropa volkstümliche Kultfiguren und Bräuche erhalten, die Ausgangspunkt für phantasiereiche Erfindungen von Götzen und Fälschungen von nordischen Göttern wurden. Mit Winckelmanns Geschichte der Kunst des Alterthums" (1764) begannen Versuche, die Anfänge der Kunst wissenschaftlich zu untersuchen. Obgleich die Idole als frühe Menschenbilder schnell Eingang in die Forschung fanden, ließ ihre künstlerische Wertschätzung auf sich warten. Ihre mögliche Funktion wird am Beispiel der Kykladenidole plausibel in Ausstellung und Katalog behandelt.
