Contemporary full leather; some scuffs and peeling to boards with corners worn; spine ends chipped with quire tips visible at head; spine's gilt lettered brown title label intact with gilt "I" stamped below spine center; long slender splittin…g to front joint but binding cords remain firm with slight pliability to board. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj and modestly enhancing shelf appearance. Old ink writing (signature?|price paid) on front pastedown along with youthful-looking two-line pencil inscription "Archer | Anchuca" near center; pencil signature "Abram Barnes" at title page's top right. Missing front free endpaper and perhaps a flyleaf; first leaf present is half-title (i.e. pages i-ii); tonal quality difference between rear pastedown and opposing leaf suggests that the rear free endpaper is missing too; obtrusive toning to leaves throughout indicative of an extended southern provenance. Binding is firm. Volume I regards Harriott's experiences in Europe etc. with the missing second volume primarily concerned with his American travels. The book was published contemporary to the life of Richard Thompson Archer (1797-1867), an Amelia County, Virginia-born physician who moved to Claiborne County, Mississippi, and circa 1835 built his no longer extant family home Anchuca (aka Anchuka, a Choctaw word meaning "happy home") located approximately 2.5 miles south of Port Gibson. The aforementioned title page signature is presumably eldest surviving son Abram Barnes Archer (1836-1913) who served in various Mississippi cavalry regiments including Magruder's Partisan Rangers during the Civil War with a postwar career managing family plantations in Holmes County, Mississippi. There is an antebellum Greek Revival mansion also named Anchuca in Vicksburg, Mississippi but with no connection to the Archer family. Although with no markings indicative of such, this book was acquired from the estate of Vicksburg attorney Lucius Bryan Dabney Sr., 1893-1967, whose insightful, ardent, and voluminous accumulation of Mississippi Valley-related books and papers from innumerable family estates in southwest Mississippi is preserved as the Natchez Trace Collection at the University of Texas at Austin.

Herz on the front paste-down of each volume, his sale Important Voyages and Travels, 9th December 2009, lot 218 First American edition, first published in London in 1807. The author is most famously remembered for being the founder of the Thames Police in 1798, but in addition to having three wives and fathering at least 13 children Harriott spent two years in America between 1793 and 1795, which he describes in 25 chapters of volume II: "I had travelled over great part of America, without meeting with a situation to answer my expectations. I had bought a small farm of 76 acres, near Newport, in Rhode-island, as a temporary residence for my family, while I made my researches. It unfortunately happened, however, that while thus employed, the growing uneasiness between England and America greatly increased, until it was suspected that Mr. Pitt had spies all over the United States; and the Englishman, who did not inveigh against his native country with equal or more violence than themselves, became liable to such suspicion. At length, I heard other whispers, insinuations, and threatenings, as I walked along the streets, until my old farming man at last told me bluntly, yet in good nature, that the people considered me as a spy" (page 126).
