Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition, Special Edition. TWAIN, Mark. Is He Living or Is He Dead? In World's Fair Number of The Cosmopolitan: An Illustrated Monthly Magazine, Vol. XV, No. 5. New York: Cosmopolitan Publishing Company, September 1893. First appearance of Mark Twain's Is He Living or Is He Dead?, pp. 629-634, illustrated by Alice Barber Stephens. Tall octavo, pp. [513]-640. Original decorated paper wrappers, with numerous halftone photographs and line illustrations throughout; fore-edge and lower edge rough cut, with numerous period advertisements. The September 1893 World's Fair Number of The Cosmopolitan is largely devoted to the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Twain's satirical story mocks the art market's tendency to neglect artists during their lifetimes while inflating their reputations after death, imagining a comic scheme in which the painter Jean-François Millet feigns his own death in order to increase the value of his work. Also contains former U.S. President Benjamin Harrison's Points of Interest; an installment of William Dean Howells's A Traveller from Altruria; Franz Boas's Ethnology at the Exposition; and contributions by others. Contents generally clean and unmarked; evenly toned. Wrappers toned, with small chips and edgewear. Binding remains sound and square. Complete in original wrappers. Very Good-. Unbound. Uncommon A.L.S. as President Elect, a rather cryptic communication, 8vo. 1 page, Indianapolis, January 15th 1889, addressed to "My Dear Sir" but with John Wanamaker's personal correspondence "received" stamp on verso, in part: ".As my reply to your letter of the 10th has been so long delayed - I have now mind you as follows: 'He ought to postpone his trip for one week.' You will not understand - this is undertaking a conclusion - and quite frankly the matter is under friendly consideration." John Wanamaker assisted Benjamin Harrison during the 1888 presidential election and many newspaper editorials at the time were predicting that he would receive a patronage appointment. It is possible that with two and a half months already passing without communication from Harrison, Wanamaker was becoming apprehensive. But he needn't have worried: Harrison appointed him the 35th US Postmaster General and he served from 1889-1893. Fine condition. Twenty-third President of the United States, serving from March 4th 1889 to March 4th 1893.…
