Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. xvii, 1 leaf, 626 pp; xiv, 1 leaf, 639 pp. Original cloth. Bookplate in Vol. I, ink stamp on pastedown and verso of title page. Small amount of red pencil underlining in Vol. II on pp. 1-3. Else a Near Fine set, without dust jackets. ISBN for Vol. II: 0674847660. 'Readers… familiar with the luminous scholarly contributions of Harry Austryn Wolfson will welcome this rich collection of essays that have been previously published in widely dispersed journals and books, The articles range over Aristotle and Plato; Philo; the Church Fathers; and Arabic, Jewish, and Christian philosophers of the Middle Ages: Averroes and Avicenna, Maimonides, and Thomas Aquinas. The twenty-eight pieces are arranged in such a manner that ideas develop and are pursued from one article to the next, forming a coherent whole. According to the editors, 'This volume reflects the most basic biographical fact about Wolfson: his life has been one of unflagging commitment, uninterrupted creativity, and truly remarkable achievement . . . Wolfson's scholarship will be viewed with awe and admiration and his impact will be durable. He has added new dimensions to philosophical scholarship and illuminated wide areas of religious thought, plotting the terrain, blazing trails, and erecting guideposts for scores of younger scholars.'.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. 2 vols.: xvii, [1], 626 + xiv, [1], 639 p.; 22.5 cm. Gathers 27 + 28 essays in facsimile (plus 2 in Hebrew) [Vol. 1 orig. 1973] `For almost forty years Harry Wolfson has devoted himself unreservedly, indeed heroically, to a bold and imaginative project entitled "Structure and Growth of Philosophic Systems from Plato t…o Spinoza." The fastidiously reasoned, intricately textured thesis underlying this grand project and unifying its many offshoots has been succinctly and lucidly described by Wolfson himself in the preface to Religious Philosophy: "If we are to follow the conventional method of dividing philosophy into ancient, medieval, and modern, then medieval philosophy is to be defined as that system of thought which flourished between pagan Greek philosophy, which know not of Scripture, and that body of philosophic writings which ever since the seventeenth century has tried to free itself from the influence of Scripture. Medieval philosophy so defined was founded by Philo. He is the interpreter of Greek philosophy in terms of certain fundamental teachings of his Hebrew Scripture, whereby he revolutionized philosophy and remade it into what became the common philosophy of the three religions with cognate Scriptures, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This triple scriptural religious philosophy, which was built up by Philo, reigned supreme as a homogeneous, if not a thoroughly unified, system of thought until the seventeenth century, when it was pulled down by Spinoza.' (v.1, p. v-vi) -- As the twelfth volume of his Structure, Wolfson intended `a definitive revision of Spinoza, with cross-references to all the previous books of the series' (Schwarz, Wolfson of Harvard, p. 224) VG set in orig. black cloth, vol. 2 in lt. edgeworn dj.
