Internally, frontis, [4], 5-150 pp, [1]…, [1] limitation, 58 wood-engraved illustrations by John Buckland Wright, light patch of browning to front paste down & front free endpaper, occasional foxing, t.e.g., others uncut, a few light marks. Housed in the publishers green cloth slip-case, bevelled edges, (corners rubbed). (313*192 mm). (Cockalorum 175). *** Buckland Wright took over four years to produce this work and considered it to be his greatest achievement. 'In his 58 illustrations Buckland Wright is both as classical and as romantic as the poet could have desired. His vision, it seems to me, approaches that of Keats as closely as is possible for any artist working in our generation. Dark blue leather with raised cords, gold lettering and decorated panels on the spine, each volume dated 1882. Wide leather corners. Blue cloth over boards. Top edges gilt. Marbled… endpapers. Only very minor scuffing to the spines -- the set sits most attractively on the shelf, not showing any of its flaws. Complete in 4 volumes. The front hinge of volume 1 is weak, and needs to be handled gently. Front cover of volume 4 is detached but sits perfectly in place. Each volume has engraved frontispiece with tissue guard. About 500 pages per volume. A bit of extra shipping will be necessary to mail this set. Please email with questions or for additional photos.

Having received a letter from Buxton Forman 'about the Matchless Orinda', he gives some details regarding her husband, who is 'an ancestor of mine, being one of the Phillips of Kilsant & Picton'. His b…rother has 'lent me a copy of her Poems which I have been reading with much interest.' He also refers to his relations 'Mr. Wogan', 'Mrs. Owen', 'Jas Phillips' and 'Hector Phillips'. The letter concludes: 'The alteration of spelling of the name of Phillips to "Philipps" was made by the third or fourth Baronet.' In 1931 Philipps was found guilty of issuing a document with intent to deceive, and served a ten-month sentence in Wormwood Scrubs. Buxton Forman's involvement in the forgeries of Thomas James Wise is proved beyond doubt in John Collins's 'The Two Forgers' (1992).
