NO slipcase or dust jacket present (likely issued with either or both). Pictorial paper boards rubbed with toning and soiling; slender wear at board edges particularly at corners; jagged 3cm…deep chip at spine head; 4.75cm surface paper loss at spine heel with glue repair to ascending tear at higher spine portion. Author's obituary newspaper clipping from July 1956 glued to ffep verso with toned impression onto opposing front flyleaf which has author's four-line ink inscription: "For Dr E Lee Dorsett | Our first physician in St Louis | Our lasting friend | Harry R. Burke." Several page corners creased from shallow fold-ins; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. Title page dated 1924 but verso has 1923 copyright. Twenty-three b/w woodcut illustrations by Sheila Burlingame. An exceptionally uncommon book in the first edition (there was a 2006 reprint) by St. Louis newspaperman Harry Rosecrans Burke who initially wrote for The Times thereafter working at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
