Die Anfänge hierzu finden wir Jedoch bereits 1611 bei dem bedeutenden Astronomen JOHANNES KEPLER (1571-1630). Und CHRISTOPH SCHEINER (1573-150) machte schon 1619 auf den Unterschied zwischen direktem und indirektem Sehen aufmerksam. Bei den flachen Gläsern kann nun bei schräger Blickrichtung keine deutliche Abbildung erfolgen, da der Augendrehpunkt bei ihnen nicht berücksichtigt ist. Infolge Zunahme der prismatischen Wirkung entstehen hier Verzerrungen. Statt eines Brennpunktes entstehen Brennlinien bei den sphärischen Linsen und wir erhalten den uns schon vom Auge her bekannten «Astigmatismus schiefer Bündel»." "Den entscheidenden Wandel brachten in der Tat erst die 1907/08 von dem Schweizer Ophthalmologen ALFRED VOGT (1879-1943) in Zürich erschienenen Veröffentlichungen. Von nun an wurden Sonnenschutzglas und… Lichtschutzglas wissenschaftlich erforschte optische Hilfsmittel. Beobachtungen an Patienten und sorgfältig angestellte Versuche überzeugten Alfred Vogt davon, daß die Gefahren des Ultraviolett für das Auge bisher überschätzt waren. Er vermutete, daß wahrscheinlich manche Krankheitserscheinungen, für die bisher das Ultraviolett verantwortlich gemacht wurde, durch andere Strahlenbereiche ausgelöst werden. Er veranlaßte einen seiner Schüler, E. Trümpy, entsprechende Bestrahlungsversuche mit Ultraviolett anzustellen. Das Ergebnis war folgendes: «Selbst stundenlang andauernde Einwirkung hochintensiven Ultravioletts im Bereich zwischen 400 und 314mµ Wellenlänge konnten keine Schädigungen hervorrufen. Vor allem gelang es nicht, auch nur eine Spur von Linsentrübung nachzuweisen. Dagegen verursachte eine etwa 15 bis 30 Minuten dauernde Bestrahlung mit intensivem kurzweiligen Ultraviolett der Wellenlängen unter 314mµ heftige Entzündungen der Bindehaut und der Hornhaut. Auch das Zustandekommen des Rotsehens der Staroperierten und des Hochgebirgswanderers wurde früher auf den Einfluß ultravioletter Strahlen zurückgeführt. Alfred Vogt wies auch diese Auffassung als unhaltbar nach. Es gelang ihm nämlich, durch konzentriertes Ultraviolett Rotsehen zu erzeugen, obwohl er die Pupillen der Patienten vor der Bestrahlung künstlich erweiterte. Die Ursache des Rotsehens ist nach Vogt auf starke Blendung mit sichtbarem Licht zurückzuführen. Auch für Adaptionsstörungen kann, wie die Vogt'sche Klinik ebenfalls nachwies, das Ultraviolett nicht verantwortlich gemacht werden. Die in dieser Richtung angestellten Prüfungen an Patienten ergaben nämlich, daß das Licht einer gewöhnlichen Glühlampe von 50HK Lichtstärke die Adaption stärker herabsetzt als hochkonzentriertes Ultraviolett.» Der hervorragende Schweizer Augenarzt widmete die Hauptarbeit seines Lebens der Erforschung des physikalisch-biologischen Problems der Wirkung der verschiedenen Lichtstrahlen auf das Auge. Drei Hauptthemen durchziehen, von Anfang bis zu Ende, mit gleich immer wiederkehrenden und stets neu bearbeiteten Leitmotiven, sein erstaunlich reiches, weit über zweihundert Publikationen umfassendes Lebenswerk. Diese drei Themen heißen: Strahlende Energie und Auge, Linse und Auge im optischen Schnitt, Auge und Vererbung. Wir wollen hier auf die Ergebnisse seiner Forschungen im einzelnen nicht eingehen. Er hat seine nahezu über zwei Jahrzehnte durchgeführten Untersuchungen 1926 zusammengefaßt. Die neuen Erkenntnisse gab er abschließend mit folgenden Worten bekannt: «Damit ist auf experimentellem Wege der ophthalmoskopische und anatomische Beweis erbracht, daß mit kurzweiligem Ultrarot nicht nur hochgradige Schädigung der Linse, sondern auch schwere Dauerschäden der Aderhaut und der Netzhaut - bei Intakt bleiben der Hornhaut - erzeugt werden können, daß somit diese Strahlen auch bei der sogenannten Sonnenblendung zweifellos eine nicht zu vernachlässigende Rolle spielen.»" E.-H.Schmitz, Geschichte der Brille I, 1995, pp.312-313.
