Name stamp on the front cover, some notes in pencil found throughout, edgewear including nicks and bumps, dampstain to the bottom of the front cover lightly affecting throughout, and some soiling to the exterior, still a very good and complete copy. For medium voice and piano. Plate number, 34327. The piece is dedicated to the singer Sigrid Onégin. Thomas Burke is credited but it is not made clear if these are his words exactly or if they are merely inspired by his 1916 short story collection, *Limehouse Nights*, which features stories set in the East London district Limehouse, home to London's first Chinatown. Helen Brown, writing for *Poplar, London: The Slice*, describes how early 20th century English media tended to demonize the area, specifically citing Burke's book as having "cemented stereotypes about prostitution, gambling and violence within the Chinese community, and whipp[ing] up anxiety about sexual relationships between Chinese men and white women." Thankfully, the same cannot be said for the lyrics of this song, but what good can be said of them we'll leave for you to decide. The notes, possibly belonging to pianist and composer Fay Foster (per the name stamp), make subtle changes to some of the lyrics to account for timbre and intonation. A rather uncommon tune from the 1920s, lyrically indicative of its time. *OCLC* locates only four holdings.
