Copy of Frederic "Baldy" Schreiber, with his signature dated 1929. A bookplate of Schreiber on the front pastedown came loose, leaving a large glue stain (see photo). "In April 1929 Cushing was to reach his sixtieth birthday. As early as February 1927 Elliott Cutler had addressed letters to Cushing's older pupils, suggesting the idea of a birthday volume and asking for advice about its development; and a year later formal invitations to contribute to a Festschrift were sent to all of H.C.'s former pupils, a large majority of whom promptly accepted. The American Medical Association cooperated by permitting the tribute to appear as a special number of the Archives of Surgery, and the deadline for manuscripts was set for 1 February 1929. A substantial volume resulted, which had caused Cutler's staff and the editorial offices of the A.M.A. not a little grief. . . . H.C. had had several recent skirmishes with the A.M.A. office over their cavalier treatment of several Brigham manuscripts, but when he saw the birthday volume and heard something of Cutler's trials and tribulations, he promptly wrote a warmhearted letter to the editor of the Journal. . . . "Although the preparation of the volume had been kept something of a secret, H.C. seems to have had a number of inadvertent forewarnings, but he had no notion of its size and scope until Saturday, 6 April, when after his usual Saturday operation, which ran well into the afternoon, the clans foregathered in the surgical laboratory at the Medical School, nearly a hundred in number. . . . H.C. was accompanied to the laboratory immediately after he had finished dictating his operative note. When they had all assembled Cutler made the presentation. . . . H.C. showed his emotion as he stumbled at first in attempting to reply. He mentioned the Amenities of sixty and types of remembrance: the things one regretted, the sorrows, and the causes of happiness. The regrets were past and were best forgotten; the sorrows one did not mention; but the many sources of happiness came from joyous work with other people and the sense of sharing in their accomplishments. . . . "The next day, Sunday, Cushing began the rather appalling task of writing handwritten notes of appreciation to each one of the eighty-two contributors, notes that often ran to three pages. . ." (Fulton, Harvey Cushing, pp. 569-72). ABOUT the owner of this copy, Frederic "Baldy" Schreiber. Fulton quotes Schreiber's description of his first months at the Brigham: "The first day I reported to Dr. Cushing's clinic he was most cordial, put his arm about my shoulders and talked to me like a son. Then he did not speak to me again for the next three months except on occasions to tell me to get out of the [observation] stands and disappear somewhere. I was rather mystified and disconcerted by this treatment until the Chief again became very cordial and our relationship was most pleasant until the end of my stay. I did not know his reasons until I heard his speech at the Neurological Conference in Berne in 1931. At that time he said that Kocher would not speak to him for 'six' weeks, during which time he 'found himself' in the laboratory and decided to stick it out in spite of such treatment. Dr. Cushing explained later that he did this to all men who came to him because he felt that those who did not like the work well enough to stay in spite of his treatment were not suitable to stand the rigors of surgery in later years" (Fulton, Harvey Cushing, p. 569).…
