With his doctoral thesis published in 1985 computing machine: A historical study of their production and use by the Empire to the Federal Republic he founded modern art history of computer science in Germany. To date, this work has remained a standard work that every professional or historian must take into their own hands, which deals with the German computer history. The information compiled in this anthology presentations, which were held on the occasion of the "farewell colloquium" for Hartmut Petzold, fit thematically into the spanned part of his dissertation and numerous later published work.
