Tic douloureux was the primary topic of an international workshop which Look place at the end of October 1967 at Titisee in the Black Forest. The workshop was attended by 27 physicians and scientists from all over the world. This monograph consists of the introductory reports in succinct form and concise extracts from the discussions which mode up half of the conference; all contributions were mode in the English language. Interdisciplinaryex change was achieved through subdivision of the topic into 3 sections corresponding to the neuronal structure of the trigeminal System. In the section on the peripheral neuron, the peripheral operative procedures and results are contrasted with the topographic relationships, pathologicanatomic and electro-physiologic findings at the trigeminal root and at the ganglion, while the differential diagnosis in atypical neuralgias is discussed with regard to a clearly demarcated indication for Operation. In the section on the medullary trigeminal neuron,the electron microscopic structure of the caudal nucleus of the spinal trigeminal root and the experimental production of paroxysmal discharges from this nucleus reveal significant consequences for the pharmacological and medical therapy of tic douloureux, especially by means of the anti-epileptic drug Tegretol. The section an supranuclear structures deals with the electrophysiology of pain in specific thalamus nuclei and the subdivision of the pain conductor into cortical and subcortical (based an experience with fiber systems, stimulus physiology and therapy).
