"A masterful telling of the infamous British military operation, the dambusters raid, from bestselling and critically acclaimed historian Max Hastings. Operation Chastise, the overnight destruction of the Mohne and Eder dams in northwest Germany by Britain's Royal Air Force 617 Squadron, was an epic wartime maneuver that has become military legend. Max Hastings grew up embracing the story, the classic 1955 movie, and the memory of Guy Gibson, the twenty-four-year-old wing commander who led the raid. In the twenty-first century, however, Hastings urges that we should review the Dambusters in much more complex shades. The aircrew's heroism was wholly authentic, as was the brilliance of Barnes Wallis, the man who invented the "bouncing bombs" the crew used to great success. But commanders who promised their young fliers that a victory at the dams could shorten the war were living a fantasy. The raid, what Germans call the Mohnekatastrophe, imposed only a temporary disruption on the Nazi war machine rather than a crippling blow. In Operation Chastise, Hastings vividly describes the evolution of Wallis's bomb and of the squadron that broke the dams at the cost of devastating losses. But he also portrays in harrowing detail those swept away by the torrents. Some 1,400 civilians perished in the biblical floods that swept through the Mohne valley, more than half of them Russian and Polish women, slave laborers under Hitler. Ironically, Air Marshal Sir Arthur "Bomber" Harris gained much of the credit, though in reality he opposed the operation as a distraction from his city-burning blitz. He also made what Hastings recognizes as the operation's biggest mistake - the failure to launch a conventional attack on the Nazis' huge post-raid repair operation, which could have transformed the impact of the dam breaches on the region's industry. Operation Chastise offers a fascinating retake on a legend by a master of the art. Hastings sets the dams' raid in the big picture of the bomber offensive and the Second World War, with compelling portraits of the young airmen, so many of whom died - including Wallis, the monstrous Harris, and the tragic Gibson - together with a superb narrative of the action of one of the most extraordinary episodes in global military memory." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. "A virtuoso performance from a veteran military historian. It is a white-knuckle narrative that brings clarity and insight to a much-loved tale, as well as offering a vital corrective to the drum-thumping conclusions of earlier books." - Sunday Times. "Hastings recounts the actual raids with dramatic intensity .He brings us into those Lancasters, flying perilously low, straight into flak.Superb." - Times (UK). "Hastings, who is a master of his craft, unfolds the story skillfully. It doesn't matter how many times you have seen the film or heard the story; this book is gripping from start to finish." - Literary Review. Bozic, Milan (jacket design); Madden, Toby (author photograph) (illustratore).

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. 1st Edition. As new condition orange boards with black spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Max Hastings; Author Dedication; List of Illustrations; Introduction; Note on Timing; Appendix I: Maj. John Frost's Orders for Operation; Biting February 1942; Appendix II: Order of Battle for C Company 2nd Parachute Battalion 28 February 1942; Appendix III: Maj. Gen. Frederick Browning's Afteraction Report on Operation Biting, March 1942; Appendix IV: Extracts from the Report of the Telecommunications Research Establishment on the German Technology Captured at Bruneval; Acknowledgments; References and a Note on Sources; Bibliography and Index. Illustrated with two sections of both black-and-white and color photographic plates plus map and black-and-white diagram. "In this enthralling history, internationally bestselling author Max Hastings recounts the odds-defying Operation Biting - a 1942 parachute commando raid on northern France to steal German intelligence. In February 1942, Royal Air Force intelligence was baffled by a newly identified radar network, code-named Wurzburg, on the western territory of Nazi occupied Europe. British intelligence proposed an assault to capture key components. Incredibly brave agents of the French Resistance risked their lives to probe the German defenses on the Normandy coast. Then a company of airborne forces were dropped into France in the dead of night amid heavy snow. Launching their attack, the Allied soldiers dismantled the German's radar and, after three nail-biting hours and a fierce battle with Wehrmacht defenders, escaped in the nick of time using landing-craft that carried them back across the stormy seas to Portsmouth. Operation Biting retells this dramatic operation through a gallery of amazing characters, from Winston Churchill, who promoted the raid, to Lord Mountbatten, who commanded Combined Operations, to the brave unsung commandos who fought their way through enemy territory. A cliffhanger of a story that ratchets the suspense to the last page, Operation Biting sheds new light on an exciting and little-known chapter of the Second World War." - from the inner front jacket flap. Hardcover. Condizione: Collectible-Very Good. Armageddon is the epic story of the last eight months of World War II in Europe by Max Hastings?one of Britain?s most highly regarded military historians, whose accounts of past battles John Keegan has described as worthy ?to stand with that of the best journalists and writers? (New York Times Book Review). In September 1944, the Allies believed that Hitler?s army was beaten, and expected that the war would be over by Christmas. But the disastrous Allied airborne landing in Holland, American setbacks on the German border and in the H?rtgen Forest, together with the bitter Battle of the Bulge, drastically altered that timetable. Hastings tells the story of both the Eastern and Western Fronts, and paints a vivid portrait of the Red Army?s onslaught on Hitler?s empire. He has searched the archives of the major combatants and interviewed 170 survivors to give us an unprecedented understanding of how the great battles were fought, and of their human impact on American, British, German, and Russian soldiers and civilians. Hastings raises provocative questions: Were the Western Allied cause and campaign compromised by a desire to get the Soviets to do most of the fighting? Why were the Russians and Germans more effective soldiers than the Americans and British? Why did the bombing of Germany?s cities continue until the last weeks of the war, when it could no longer influence the outcome? Why did the Germans prove more fanatical foes than the Japanese, fighting to the bitter end? This book also contains vivid portraits of Stalin, Churchill, Eisenhower, Montgomery, and the other giants of the struggle. The crucial final months of the twentieth century?s greatest global conflict come alive in this rousing and revelatory chronicle.
