Exceedingly rare ephemeral programme issued on the occasion of a gathering commemorating the death of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. pp. 7. 12mo., measuring 5.5" x 8.5". Illustrated, twice-stapled, card covers bearing a likeness of the King in lilac ink to the centre of the front cover. Comprises of a complete order of events including details of hymns, text of remembrances, lessons, psalms, prayers, sermon by the Rev. Canon Howitt, etc. Two light horizontal creases to the front cover, one very faint spot to the rear page, else, remarkably well-preserved in consideration of its age. Contents bright, clean, and unmarked with tight, stapled binding. Unrecorded in commerce. OCLC indicates no institutional holdings of this title at time of cataloguing. Rare indeed.

Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society. (Baron's method involved asking one celebrity how to contact another.) He next discusses two of his works: '"The Memorial Windows" appeared in the Gentleman's & was published in Pippins & Cheese (Bradbury & Evans) - "The Valley" you will see in enclosed list'. He concludes by thanking Baron for his 'complimentary note'. With envelope addressed to 'J. T. Brown [sic] | 18 Griffin Street, | Witton, | Blackburne [sic]'. The 'enclosed note' referred to by Hatton is a printed publicity flier (2pp., 16mo) by the London publishers Frederick Warne & Co., with one side of the leaf advertising 'The Companion Library' (listing seven of 'Joseph Hatton's Novels'), and the other 'Joseph Hatton's New Novel, The Queen of Bohemia' ('Ready July 1st 1878').
