The book is profusely illustrated with photos, many from WWII, plus maps, newspaper clippings, etc. Signed "Best Wishes, Phillip E. Hauck" on the first printed page, but the signature is probably a facsimile. In WWII, Hauck's engineer company was the first that stormed Omaha Beach in France. The war ended for him at the Battle of the Bulge. He is the recipient of four Battle Stars, the Purple Heart, as well as the Bronze Star. In 1957 he designed and built the world's largest electric revolving clock. Later came the design and building of a weather forecaster, the Big G, on the roof of the Guarantee Savings building in downtown Fresno. Bound in the original full color pictorial laminated boards. From the Sacramento Bee newspaper (Sept 16, 2014): "Fresno resident and veteran Phillip Hauck, 93, smiled and warmly greeted people in his path, handing out pamphlets about his new book, Foxholes of My Life. ItÂ's about his time in the service, he said, but also about his marriage of 70 years with the same beautiful woman. He smiled and unfolded the enclosure for his name tag to reveal a small, square envelope. IÂ'm carrying home a love letter to her that I wrote in 1944, he said. ItÂ's never been opened. Hauck had never sent the letter and only discovered it recently. But better late than never: He intends to finally deliver it to his wife, seven decades later. Hauck was a combat engineer on Omaha Beach on D-Day, and he also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, among other honors.
