This memoir details the experiences of a Greek Jew in Hitler's concentration camps. Written with objectivity and yet with considerable sensitivity, this memoir details the experiences of a Greek Jew in Hitler's concentratoin camps. Marco Nahon, a physician was practicing medicine in the small Thracian town of Dhidhimoteichon, already in Nazi hands, when the Germans began rounding up Jews. In 1943, Nahon and his family were deported to Birkenau, where his wife and daughter were killed, He witnessed firsthand the calculated brutality designed by the likes of Eichmann and Speer and implemented by Mengele and others. Excerpt: Dr. Nahon is a Jew of Greek nationality who once practiced medicine in his native country with an M.D. degree from the Faculté Française de Médecine et de Pharmacie at the University of Beirut, Lebanon. He suffered the fate of most of the Jews in the countries occupied by Hitler during World War II: with all of his family he was deported to the annihilation camp of Auschwitz- Birkenau, which he and his son alone survived. They now live in the United States. Dr. Nahon has told the story of his experience with objectivity as a prime concern. During his captivity he believed that he would be obligated to do so if he ever emerged alive. Dr. Nahon strongly feels, as we do, that this true account deserves to take its place in the gruesome record of war lest we forget. A typescript copy of the French original was deposited by the author in the archives of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, where Steven Bowman read it in 1978 during the course of his initial researches into the tragic fate of Greek Jews during World War II. Several years later, Bowman learned from Nora Levin of Gratz College that Dr. Nahon was still alive at ninety-two and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. An interview with Dr. Nahon was arranged, at which time a first-draft translation of the memoir was obtained with the intent to submit it to the University of Alabama Press for publication in its Judaica series. The original translator was asked to prepare the revised version, which is now the text of the present volume.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Mexico, 1970. The world celebrates its first three time World Cup champion. Gabriel, however, has little to celebrate. Brazil, 2013. Duda, a successful sports marketing executive, is called to a meeting that will change his life. Sofia, his love of many years, and Edson, his friend and star/captain of the Brazilian national team take the news in very distinct ways when Duda calls and proposes something that will ?change the soccer world forever.? FIFA and sponsors are not enthusiastic, but little by little Duda finds allies and his idea takes shape. Meanwhile, Natalija, an attractive and successful independent journalist has moved to Rio to follow a lead on the story of another prize that will be disputed at the World Cup. Everything is on track until Duda travels to Mexico City. Brazil, June 12, 2014. After the inauguration ceremony, Brazil's national team takes the pitch and on TV all one can see are thousands of shimmers of light ? Natalija smiled because she knew that he knew that she knew about soccer. She smiled because he looked at her like in that way, on this beautiful May afternoon, on this beautiful terrace next to the ocean, and she was sharing this moment with a beautiful man who not only knew about soccer, and knew that she knew about soccer, but who was so interested in her that he said nothing about it. She smiled because it had been so long since she had been in the presence of a man she was interested in; she had felt it the moment they met, even though he was exactly the opposite of her type. ?He drives a Porsche for Christ's sake!? she had thought playfully.
