Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. i-xxx, 1-232, [4] pages. Hardcover: H 19.75cm x L 12.5cm. Contemporary full leather; front board only tenuously attached but rear board firm; boards scuffed and stained; spine with five raised bands but with title label chipped with partial loss to its dulled gilt lettering. Text block edges toned with staining/so…iling to top edge and upper fore-edge. Varied interior foxing/toning with soiling and stains; two antiquarian ink signatures - "Willm Gill G/[?]" likely the initial owner as there are ink cross-outs over letters followed by the presumed successive owner "Wm Molliston[?]" - both at top of title page; slender stub evident between ffep and opposing title page so evidently missing a flyleaf (ffep verso has impressions of title page's ink writing so likely that the missing leaf was removed contemporaneously with signatures; OCLC citations do not call for a frontis so missing leaf relegated to flyleaf status). Text block is firm. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the front board and modestly enhances the book's shelf appearance. Acquired from a modest collection of eighteenth and early nineteenth century legal and medical works from a Columbus, Mississippi estate which had familial roots to the Maryland Eastern Shore and the hamlet of Cambridge in Dorchester County with descent from Maryland U.S. Representative and ambassador William Vans Murray (1760-1803) and/or his nephew William Vans Murray Robertson (1797 or 1799-1836). However, cursory online research does not directly connect a William Gill or a William Molliston (if those handwriting decipherings are correct) to Murray or Robertson. However there are land document records in the 1750s and 1820s involving a William Molliston in Kent County, Delaware which does offer geographic proximity to Cambridge. Also Volume VIII of the "Journals of the Continental Congress" note that on Tuesday, August 12, 1777 "William Molliston be appointed a third lieutenant in the service of the United States." None of these records hint at a Molliston affiliated to the medical field which is not a prerequisite for ownership this tome but certainly a probable scenario. Of course there may not be a family descent linkage at all for books enter collections in more paths than lineage alone but this curious genealogical puzzle shall be inherited by the book's next owner.
