Doddy Hay was one of Britain's leading sky divers and test parachutists, who resigned from the Royal Air Force in 1958 to team with James Martin and help develop the Martin-Baker ejector seat. The three parts of The Man in the Hot Seat detail Hay's experience as a parachutist with the Royal Air Force, the story of James Martin and the ejection seat, and Hay's work with Martin-Baker as the human projectile for the development of the ejection seat, when he was in hospital almost as often as he was out of it.
