Condizione: Very Good. Court Summons Autograph Letter Signed by Benjamin Ignatius Hayes, First District Judge of Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Bernardino Counties, Los Angeles, California, 1862, 8 x 9.5 inches, 1 pp. Handwritten letter on sturdy lined paper; some minor chipping to edges along previous fold lines; minor spot stains, writing not affected; overall very good condition. Court summons written by Benjamin Ignatius Hayes, the First District Judge of Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Bernardino Counties; the letter summons two individuals to "give evidence of your knowledge touching a matter of controversy before said Judge pending, wherein the People of the State of California are plaintiff, and Ramon Carillo is defendant." I was unable to find any information on Ramon Carillo or the two individuals being summoned; worthy of further research. One of a kind early Californiana. Benjamin Hayes (1815-1877) was an American pioneer, member of the Los Angeles Rangers, and the first judge of the district court of Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Bernardino counties, at a time when Los Angeles and the surrounding area were characterized by violence and mob rule. He was once shot at by an angry litigant from three feet away, though the bullet passed harmlessly through his hat (Pioneer Notes From the Diaries of Judge Benjamin Hayes, 1849-1875, edited and privately published by Marjorie Tisdale Wolcott, Los Angeles, 1929).

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near fine. First Edition. "Few insights into the transition of Southern California from Mexican to American control are as wide-ranging and penetrating as those found in the diaries of Benjamin I. Hayes (1815-77). As a judge, Hayes had a privileged view of the most important and at times controversial legal cases involving the Southland, as well as the colorful characters that were often embroiled in legal proceedings. From his description of being shot at by an enraged partisan of Californios he had earlier prosecuted to his lyrical evocation of the East San Bernardino Valley in spring bloom, the diary entries open a window into an important time in Southern California's sweeping transition from one way of life to another." Octavo: 307 pp. with a frontispiece and 15 illustrations. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles. Faint offsetting to the front endpapers. The spine is very lightly faded; else near fine. Zamorano Select 45.
