Farragut and Our Naval Commanders. is on a half-title page immediately preceding the title page. Verso lists the copyright date as 1866. Verso also as notations of errata at nine specific pages. Cover has wear, soiling, and bumped corners. Spine faded but below the title has the names of a dozen prominent naval commanders listed. List of illustrations has been checked against the text and all listed illustrations are present. Engravings include: Farragut's Naval Engagement (Mobile Bay), Sinking of the Pirate Alabama off the Coast of France, The Red River Expedition Passing the Rapids, and Bombardment and Capture of Fort Fisher. In addition there are portraits of 18 officers identified in the List of Illustrations. Some foxing and discoloration around the illustrations and some image transference to the facing page. There is foxing and page discoloration throughout the book, with some soiling and stains from apparently spilled liquid. Pagers are all separate and text is generally unaffected by the moisture stains. Other than notation inside the front cover about the book being donated to a library, there appear to be no other library markings. Joel Tyler Headley (December 30, 1813 - January 16, 1897) was an American clergyman, historian, author, newspaper editor, adventurer and politician who served as Secretary of State of New York. Headley belonged to the American Party. He graduated from Union College in 1839 and took a course in theology at the Auburn Theological Seminary in Auburn, New York. After being ordained, he preached at Stockbridge, Massachusetts, but soon had to give up his profession due to the strain, going to Europe in 1842. He turned to history writing, producing many works on various subjects. His writings were among the first to call attention to the Adirondack Mountains as a health resort, and his best-known work is The Chaplains and Clergy of the Revolution. He later accepted the solicitations of Horace Greeley and became associate editor of the New York Tribune. Headley selected Newburgh, New York as his country seat; its close proximity to New York City and upstate New York was appealing. Outside of the city boundary, in the mostly rural town of New Windsor, Headley purchased approximately 13 acres of land in the summer of 1850. Headley was a member of the New York State Assembly (Orange Co., 1st D.) in 1855; and was New York Secretary of State from 1856 to 1857, elected on the American Party ticket at the 1855 New York state election. This is the first biography of David Farragut! (Nevins)! Joel T. Headley, an American historical author, was known for his biographical works on important American military leaders, such as Grant and Sherman. His major contribution, of course, is his account of the Civil War, entitled The Great Rebellion . His other Civil War writings expanded his military focus beyond the land-based campaigns and their leaders. Farragut and Our Naval Commanders is awash with heroes of the Sea. This work deals exclusively with all aspects of the American Navy from Admirals and Ship Captains, their ships, the types of guns used on the warships, the wars that the Navy played roles in, as well as details of some of the earliest combat vessels: The Monitor, Galena, and Ironsides. The naval officer biographies include: Admiral Farragut, Rear-Admiral S. H. Dahlgren, Rear-Admiral L. M. Goldsborough, Rear-Admiral S. H. Stringham, Rear-Admiral C.H. Davis, Commodore W. D. Porter, Captain C. S. Boggs, Lieutenant W.B. Cushing, Rear-Admiral S. F. Dupont, Rear-Admiral A. H. Foote, Vice-Admiral.
