DESCRIPTION: THREE LIONS AND THE CROSS OF LORRAINE: BARTHOLOMAEUS ANGLICUS, JOHN OF TREVISA, JOHN TATE, WYNKYN DE WORDE, AND DE PROPRIETATIBUS RERUM. Bird & Bull Press, 1992. No. 95 of 138 copies. Tall quarto (4to), 12 x 8 1/2 inches, 26 pages plus leaf. Quarter morocco with paper over boards, pictorial design on front cover. Letterpress printed using Van Dijck types by M & H type on Frankfurt mouldmade paper. Contains four essays, 19 pages of facsimile text and woodcuts from DE PROPRIETATIBUS RERUM , and a specimen leaf inserted into a mylar folder, circa 1495 printed by Wynkyn de Worde. Book is protected with an archival clear Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper. _____CONDITION: Near fine. 1 1/4 inch geometric band of fading across the top of the front cover, otherwise entirely fine throughout. The rare specimen leaf is in fine condition, with two small number notations in the upper right hand corner and a 1/4 inch curvilinear defect at the edge of the left margin. Text is clear and sharp on both sides without dampstaining or foxing._____DISCUSSION: De Proprietatatibus Rerum (On the Properties of Things), written by Franciscan scholar Bartholomaeus Anglicus around 1240, is a medieval encyclopedia compiling knowledge across many fields including theology, philosophy, natural sciences, the human body, etc. It achieved immense popularity and was the most widely read encyclopedia of the late medieval period. It was the first book printed on paper made by England's first papermaker, John Tate, the first printed English version by Wynkyn de Worde. Bird & Bull proprietor Henry Morris recognized (correctly) that the leaf was exceedingly rare and that he was highly unlikely to ever see another copy of De Proprietatibus Rerum, either complete or incomplete, again. He jumped at the chance to purchase an incomplete copy, commenting: "I knew it would probably be the most important work I could ever hope to produce in the field of paper making history." ______NOTE: International shipping cost using USPS International Priority EXPRESS Mail with tracking to most locations in Europe and the United Kingdom is $60 U.S. dollars. Shipping cost to more distant locations may incur additional cost.
