Separate English and Hebrew titles on the portfolio and interior wrappers, in black lettering. Signed by the artist in Hebrew at the top of the Hebrew title of the interior wrappers. This portfolio contains a collection of 24 plates of reproductions after paintings created by Polish-born Israeli artist Henryk Hechtkopf (1910-2004). The plates contain powerful images of the destruction of Warsaw and the decimated ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto, in the direct aftermath of the the Holocaust and the German occupation of the city, during WWII. Hechtkopf survived the Holocaust in Soviet forced labor camps. When the war ended, he returned to his hometown of Warsaw, to find that tragically his entire family had been murdered, and that the city lay in ruins. Each plate is finely reproduced in shades of brown after the original images, and printed by "Graphica-Bezalel" on heavy stock paper, measuring 13 3/4x 9 3/4" (images 9x 6 3/4"). Plates are all captioned in Hebrew and English below. Includes a text foreword, printed on separate plates in Hebrew and English, by Arieh Leon Kubovy. Portfolio with some light rubbing, creasing and a few closed tears to extremities. Interior wrappers with a small closed tear at the tail of the spine. Rectos of plates all clean, with a few small water stains on some of the versos. Portfolio in very good, wrappers and plates in very good+ to near fine condition overall. Scarce.
