Die positive, fördernde und oftmals tatsächlich heilsame Wirkung von Tieren auf den Menschen, auf Menschen mit Störungen und Beeinträchtigungen steht dort außer Frage. In den letzten Jahren findet die tiergestützte Intervention auch in Deutschland mehr Beachtung. Ich selbst stoß auf diesen Bereich durch die Beobachtung einer heilpädagogischen Begleitung. Als ich mit Gerrit das erste Mal den Bauernhof besuchte, hatte ich noch nicht spezifisch den Einsatz von Tieren in Gedanken. Hier ging es darum, Erfahrungsräume zu entdecken und Vitalität zu entwickeln. Als Gerrit unsere Katze 'Janis' sah veränderte sich plötzlich sein gesamter körperlicher Ausdruck: Er richtete sich auf und seins sonst sehr traurig wirkende Mimik veränderte sich. Ich konnte das erste Mal sein Lachen erleben. Auch bei Nico war dies erkennbar. Als er mich zu den Dackeln seines Gastvaters führte, war er sehr einfühlsam gegenüber den Tieren und zeigte mehr Selbstsicherheit. Diese Beobachtungen veranlassten mich dazu, mich mit den tiergestützten Interventionen auseinanderzusetzen. Gerrit befindet sich mittlerweile nicht mehr in Begleitung. Ich führe die Begleitung mit Thalea, 6 Jahre, weiter. Durch die Anwesenheit der Tiere konnte ich auch bereits bei Thalea eine andere Gemütslage beobachten. Auch zeigte sie großes Selbstvertrauen. Das Zusammenleben mit einem Tier wirkt blutdrucksenkend und kreislaufstabilisierend. Dies ist bereits seit den siebziger Jahren bekannt und wurde mittlerweile unter anderem von der amerikanischen Soziologin Erika Friedmann belegt. Anhand meiner Beobachtungen der heilpädagogischen Fachpraxis stelle ich mir die Frage, welche Aspekte die Mensch-Tier-Beziehung kennzeichnet, was die Verhaltensaspekte sind und welches Potential in den einzelnen Tieren steckt. Dies bildet ein wichtiges Grundlagenwissen für die Arbeit mit Tieren.
