Dezember 1926 "startete Walter Mittelholzer zusammen mit dem Schriftsteller und Initiator des Fluges René Gouzy, dem Chefmechaniker und Hilfspilot Hans Hartmann und dem Geologen Arnold Heim zum Afrikaflug von Zürich nach Kapstadt, wo die Reisegesellschaft am 21. Februar 1927 nach zahlreichen Etappen landete. Die für den Flug verwendete Dornier Merkur [.] war von den Dornier-Werken in Friedrichshafen eigens für die Expedition entlang der Nilroute mit Schwimmern und einem Zusatztank ausgerüstet worden. [.] Da der Flug in erster Linie wissenschaftlichen Zwecken dienen sollte, wurde der fotografischen Ausrüstung besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Sie umfasste laut Mittelholzer unter anderem auch Kameras für die Herstellung von Kartenmaterial." (etheritage ethz ch). "Nach dem Afrikaflug von 1926/27 unternahm Mittelholzer noch vier weitere Flüge nach Afrika [.] Das Bildarchiv der ETH-Bibliothek besitzt zu all diesen Flügen reichhaltiges Bildmaterial. Zum Afrikaflug von 1926/27 sind jedoch nur gut 100 Fotografien von Arnold Heim überliefert." (ibid.) - Das mitgeführte Kameramaterial bestand aus 2 Tropen-Nettel-Deckrullo 13/18, ausserdem "verschiedene Handapparate kleineren Formates [.], worunter die mit gewöhnlichem Kinofilm zu ladende Leica-Schlitzverschlusskamera der Firma Leitz, Wetzlar [.]. Für die Handkameras lcarette und Cocarette 6,5 X 11 cm verwendeten wir Ilford Rollfilm, die sich für die Tropen besonders gut bewährten.
