Weniger bekannt sind Mittelholze…rs Flugexpeditionen ins Ausland, mit denen er sich auch als gewiefter Medienunternehmer erwies. Die Bilder seiner Reisen nach Spitzbergen, ins damalige Persien oder Abessinien vermarktete er auf allen Kanalen: in Buchern, Filmen und in der Presse. Der Durchbruch gelang Mittelholzer mit dem Afrikaflug 1926/27 im Wasserflugzeug > von Zurich nach Kapstadt. Mittelholzers Fluge wurden von wichtigen Industriellen und Bankiers jener Zeit finanziell unterstutzt und hatten die erklarte Absicht, die Luftfahrt in der Schweiz popular zu machen.
