Original sand and brown paper covered boards illustrated with palm tree and swastika emblem, with oatmeal cloth spine 11x16cm. 171pp including b/w illustrations and colour maps, complete with loose colour folding map in the rear pocket. Covers near fine; interiors ear fine and unfilled, tanned, the loose map neatly folded with corner crease. Especially rare in this condition. Worldcat and Library Hub record 9 copies (along with a 1942 issue). This was planned by Regional Councillor KA Stuckenberg and senior Reich Ministry official Dr W Heinrichsdorff, and edited by E. Nanssen. Its contributors were predominantly academic, including Professors W. Eggers, G. Wagner, W. Braune, E. Dammam, J. Lukas, A. Schaade, and E. Rodenwaldt, some of whom indicated as "currently in the field". This opens with a portrait of Hitler and message of support from Goebbels. In addition to the Diary (1 week to 2 pages), sections cover African geography and population; Germany's role in Africa's development; German and Italian exploration in North Africa (Nachtigal, Rohlfs, Brezzi, et al); Flora and fauna (with line drawings); currencies, weights and measures; African states and colonies; Italian ranks (with illustrated insignia); Dealing with Muslims; Phrasebook (German, Italian, French, English, Egyptian Arabic, Hausa, and Swahili); Advice on climate, health, water, diet etc. There is a full-page colour chart of the Northern celestial hemisphere, and double page colour map of Africa with southern Africa inset. The loose "Ubersichtskarte von Nordost-Afrika 1:5000000", 49x39cm, dated VIII 42, was compiled and published by the Heeresplankammer. Coverage centres on the Libyan Desert, bounded by the Mediterranean coast from Tripoli to Banias (N), the Red Sea coast from Sinai to Port Sudan (E), and Tibesti and Borku (SW). Details include international boundaries, the desert oases, primary and secondary roads, important tracks, dune fields, jebels and other landmarks (Uweinat, Gilf Kebir etc).
