Hardcover. 185p., first edition orange boards in dj; jacket is embellished with the "rising sun" motif. Mild shelfwear, dust jacket has a small crease, spine panel orange faintly faded. Author has inscribed and signed (as "Helen Barlow") the ffep, year of publication; and laid in is a later-generation studio portrait of the auth…or, which does not duplicate anything supplied in book or on jacket, as these are imageless. Yet another record of between-wars espionage on the part of US civilians. Had "Heiji Vere" left in all of her spy stuff (it is plainly sanitized) and had she handled the romance element more deftly, "Two zany Americans" might have attracted a major publishing house. The plot is as follows, per the blurb, which is surely author-written: "When Jaine Latimere, an Army wife who was also a radio broadcaster in Manila, decided that she and her 'right hand,' Kay Carstand, needed a vacation in Japan, the [US] authorities in the Philippines expedited their arrangements, because they could use this trip to their advantage. Jai was a trained observer of the passing parade and Kay was a gifted photographer, particularly with her lapel camera. And that was why the government wanted to use them." Helen Bryan Barlow is well-connected; related to Wm Jennings Bryan, her father a pioneer plastic surgeon, her mother, Nell Kauffman, one of the Gibson Girls. The indispensable blurb states that the author "has been in the movies, the theatre and radio since she was ten, has been married to an Army man, now a retired colonel, for 50 years." Most details of her vita overlap those of the fictionalized character of "Jai," and we may suppose that Helen Bryan Barlow did indeed spy as related --for the allies, in the pre-war gentlemanly style, a style doomed by FDR's acquired distrust of gentility. Jaine spent her childhood in Japan, has some familiarity with the language and customs, and loves the country and its people. She is quick to notice the predominance of German and Italian 'tourists' . The 'girls' go to Yokohama, Nikko, Tokyo, Miyanoshita. They find two treasures among the female 'bellhops,' --Suki and Sumi, who have a big part to play in the success of their assignment.
