This important American newspaper figure was long-time publisher of the influential "San Diego Union-Tribune," having taken it over after her husband's death in 1973. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in New York, New York on 18 September 1976 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 13-cent "Adolph S. Ochs Publisher" stamp at upper right. Near fine. Simple blue and gold printed "First Day Cover" at left. No distracting recipient's name/address present. At lower right, below the cancellation, Copley signs large and bold in blue fountain pen. A beautiful example on an appropriate cover.

After retiring, he was a Foreign Policy advisor to Senator John Kerry and Senator Hillary Clinton. His final position in government was to serve as Special Advisor to Pakistan and Afghanistan under President Obama. Many believe that he was first in line to serve as Secretary of State, if John Kerry or Hillary Clinton had won the Presidency in 2004 or 2008. Holbrooke passed away in 2010.

On leaving the presidency, President and Mrs. Ford moved to California, where President Ford died on December 25, 2006. Also well-regarded philanthropist, Copley "gave millions to the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. She also underwrote the construction of a library at the University of San Diego" (New York Times). In the printed dedication to this signed limited first edition of Last of the Californios (number 415 of an unspecified limitation), Copley notes it is Copley Books' third book on Baja California, "the 'mother' of the California in which so many millions of us live todayÉ With these books we have striven to enrich the knowledge and renew the relationship and understanding between the peoples of the two Californias."
