Helga a huit ans quand elle ouvre la première page de son journal. Nous sommes en 1938 et les nazis ont envahi Prague ; les écoles sont fermées, le père a perdu son travail et toute la famille est confinée dans l'appartement. Un à un, les amis et les proches disparaissent, les déportations commencent. En 1941, Helga et ses parents sont envoyés à Terezín, ils y resteront trois ans. Et Helga raconte : les voyages interminables dans des conditions inhumaines, la faim, les maladies, la souffrance ; mais aussi l'amitié, les petits moments de joie, l'espoir. Et puis ce sera l'horreur à Mauthausen et Auschwitz. Et Helga écrit et dessine encore et encore pour obéir à la prière de son père : « Dis-leur ce que tu vois. » Helga ne reverra jamais son père, mais elle et sa mère survivront. À la fin de son journal, Helga a quinze ans. Elle fait partie de la petite centaine d'enfants rescapés sur plus de quinze mille déportés.».

Da es keine Fotografien aus jener Zeit gibt, sind Zeichnungen die einzigen erhaltenen Bilddokumente über das Leben in Theresienstadt.Helga Weissová - heute eine angesehene Künstlerin - hat die meisten ihrer Theresienstadt-Bilder lange unter Verschluß gehalten und erst jetzt zur Veröffentlichung freigegeben.
