On saura gré aux auteurs, traducteurs et éditeurs de ce petit livre d'art de diffuser à l'intention du grand public une des merveilles de l'iconographie chrétienne médiévale : les mosaïques qui décorent la première coupole de l'atrium de Saint-Marc à Venise par une évocation des dernières page…s de la Genèse, création et chute. Outre leurs qualités d'exécution, l'intérêt de ces mosaïques se trouve dans la source de cette iconographie : la « Bible de Cotton », un manuscrit enluminé d'origine grecque, du Ve ou Vie s., offert à Henri VIII d'Angleterre et entré ensuite dans la bibliothèque de sir Cotton. Par rapport aux autres réalisations de la même époque (XHIe s.), il s'agit donc d'une iconographie archaisante, ce qui se manifeste par exemple dans la façon de signifier les jours de la création. Comme il se doit, ce livre est abondamment illustré. Il comporte une introduction, quelques indications techniques et la description du programme iconographique choisi. Cette merveille qu'il nous permet de contempler réveillera quelque peu la mauvaise conscience des chrétiens d'occident, car elle est aussi liée au sac de Constantinople en 1204, un aspect de la rivalité entre Venise et sa « mère », Byzance. L' autrice Gisela Hellenkemper (1944 à 1999) était une archéologue et une conservatrice de Musée allemande. Traduit de l'allemand et adapté par F. Boespflug. Illustré par des planches en couleurs de H.N. Loose. Publié par les Editions du Cerf en 1986, cartonnage illustré de l' éditeur en très bon état, format in 4, 51 pages.
